Oh, my heavens

So much for getting this blog going... I had such high hopes of this whole experience; the great food and watching my blog grow until I was being invited to be on the Today Show to share my Dallas food experience... or something like that.

But, those things will have to wait until we have the money to afford eating out enough to turn this thing into a money maker!

I have been waiting for a teaching job, that hasn't come. Once it does, I will definitely be catching up on all the great places I've been missing!

But I can say that in the few times we have eaten out, most of those times have been to Jason's Deli. Yes, I know it's a chain, but we just can't get enough! It is relatively cheap, and has something for everyone. The Irish Potato soup and salad bar is a lovely combination for only $8.

Go to Jasons. And in a few months when I have a job, I will have much more to say about food.

Button

I feel so proud of myself! I made a button and put it on my personal blog. You can click on it and it will bring you right to Fish Heads and Water. I am still figuring out how to make my button available for other people to put on their blogs...

Casa Vieja

Me and my "guest eater", Austin the Tiger
(he insisted on the face painting booth!)
This weekend, we headed up to Bonham, Texas. My parents, my brother, L and I visited "Trade Days," basically a huge community garage sale that takes place once per month. I always feel guilty going to places like that. It makes me feel like I should buy something from each vendor's stand so they don't have to go home and eat cereal for dinner for the rest of their lives. I got a few things from the jewelry section, and I am happy with my purchases.

But, this is my food blog! So, on to the food. Casa Vieja was our destination, the place my parents referred to as their "Mexican Cruise." For their 25th anniversary this year, they had planned to take a cruise, but too many crises were happening and it foiled their plans. So my dad took my mom out to a few places, and they just got to pretend they were on a cruise...

As far as Mexican food goes, The Vieja did not disappoint! The ambience (and heat) really made you feel that you had been transported to Chihuahua City. And I loved that they gave each person at the table their own salsa. I had a lovely beef taco and cheese enchilada with a side of guacamole (which I have a serious love for...), rice, and beans. Everyone else had the chicken enchiladas, except my brother (who was conveniently disguised as a tiger) who had chicken fingers. (The part of the menu that said "North of the Border" was particularly amusing to me!)

Casa Vieja is a real Mexican place, and the only downside was the misleading menu. We all ordered the "lunch specials" but of course we did not read the fine (invisible) print that those prices only went for the weekdays.

I also have issues with Mexican food. Every couple of weeks, I will get a serious craving for some red beans and rice accompanied by some sort of tortilla smothered in something mexican tasting. However, when I get to the last few bites, it's an effort to gag it down. I always wonder why I do it to myself and vow never to eat another bite of authentic Mexican, but the cravings always return and I am once again slave to my palate. This is another food oddity I have, along with foods that cannot touch. But that is another post.

*Disclaimer: Bonham is out in B-F-E! My dad works at the VA hospital out there, so unless you know someone who lives there, you may never get to visit Casa Vieja!

He'd better get excited about eating out this much!

Buffalo Wild Wings

L and I went here to celebrate our 2nd anniversary. I was craving wings in a bad way, perhaps feeling nostalgic for our favorite spot in Utah, Wingers. When we opened the door to the place, my hair was literally blown back by the sound! I don't consider myself to be sensitive to noise, but the hostess was literally yelling, "HOW MANY?" When I saw that the number of tv's outnumbered the booths, I was not thrilled. It's hard enough to get L to talk to me during dinner, much less when there is any form of sports on tv. I normally try to get the seat that blocks the views of as many tv's as possible, but that just wasn't going to happen in this place!

We sat down, and the waitress asked if we would like to play trivia or poker. "Uh..." Was she gonna deal out the cards? I had no idea what she was talking about, and I didn't even know if I heard her correctly, so we declined. (Later on, I saw waitresses handing people electronic games to play while they waiting for their food.)

The menu had so many choices it was hard to know where to start. You start out with your main entree and then choose from like 12 bottles of wing sauce. L went for the classic basket of boneless wings, while I went for the Buffalito Tacos. I was totally hoping this was just like the Wingers Wrap I ordered everytime at Wingers, but alas, it was lacking.

L's boneless wings were quite tasty. He went for a honey bbq sauce, which was not as spicy as they made it sound. But L could drink nail polish remover without tearing up. He also had to order the fries on the side. They weren't even that great!

My Buffalito tacos were a "light" entree, which I wasn't even going for. They were watery, and once I had a taste of L's boneless wings, I gave up on them. The only saving grace was the beer battered onion rings...perfect ratio of batter to onion, very delicious.

Needless to say, I don't think we will be visiting there again. I will give them credit for great customer service, the manager visited our table and got our food out to us pretty quick. Hence, my ratings.

How the Blog was Born

As Mr. L and I sat in JC's Burger House today, I thought of this food blog. Mr. L and I love to eat out. I mean LOOOOVE to eat out! I love experiencing new tastes and love the feeling of satisfying a craving that has been eating at my insides for a long time. We had talked about trying a new restaurant every weekend, and sitting at the Burger House, chowing down on my fried pickles (how love being back in the south!), thinking of how I would describe this dish to my friends who have never had the pleasure of such sapid, sodium laden flavor pass their lips, this blog was born.

You can check out the side bar to see the rating scales and labels if you are looking for a certain something to whet your appetite. I will definitely be enjoying this food journey through Texas! If you know of any places or have any requests of where I should visit, please leave it in the comments!
